Vessel operations and emissions

Route, speed and port-call planning help reduce avoidable fuel consumption. Planned maintenance keeps machinery and hull performance under review.

Fuel and voyage records support emissions reporting and the allocation of EU ETS allowance costs between owners and charterers.

The EU Emissions Trading System

The EU Emissions Trading System puts a carbon price on covered maritime emissions. Shipping companies surrender EU Allowances, known as EUAs, against verified emissions, with one EUA representing one tonne of CO2 equivalent.

The system covers 100% of emissions on voyages between EU and EEA ports and emissions in port, plus 50% of emissions on voyages between an EU or EEA port and a port outside the area. The maritime phase-in reaches 100% of covered emissions from 2026.

Clear voyage data, contractual allocation and documented settlement help owners, charterers and cargo interests understand how the exposure is handled.
